Dry Scalp V. Dandruff

How to tell the difference.
Do you think you have Dandruff? Or do you think you just have Dry scalp? Did you know they are not the same? Even though they do have similiar symptoms!
Here are a few tips to determine if you have dry scalp or dandruff and, how to treat both!
DRY SCALP- When scalp does not produce or hold enough moisture.
Causes;
• Dry air (i.e Winter )
• Excessive shampooing
• Skin Condition (i.e Eczema)
**Flakes from dry scalp are small and white**
Solution; less shampooing( once or every other week), hydrating shampoo/conditioning treatments, scalp massages with tea tree/ coconut oil & drinking water.
DANDRUFF- Too much oil on the scalp. When excess oil causes dead skin cells to build up and shed.
Causes;
• Fungal infections
• Oils secreted by the scalp
• Sensitivity to substances (i.e hair products)
**Flakes from Dandruff are large and yellow or oily looking.***
Solution; Dandruff shampoo or fungal treatment (follows instructions). ***If symptoms continue after using dandruff shampoo consult with a dermatologist.
|Dandruff can also be confused with medical conditions such as, Psoriasis of the scalp, Seborrheic Dermatitis, fungal infections of the scalp or Eczema. | *See dermatologist for all of the above. *
