How To Prevent Heat Damage

Writer's picture: BettaSprayDatBettaSprayDat

Are you afraid to wear your natural hair straight because of heat damage? As a hairstylist I hear of clients not wanting to put heat on their hair or doing the “no heat”

Challenge bc they are scared to damage their hair. Here are a few tips to help prevent your hair from being damaged by heat:

  1. Make sure that your hair is 100% clean and dry before using any flat irons or curling irons. (Dirty Hair causes any old product on the hair to burn)

  2. Use a heat protectant before blow drying and flat ironing.

  3. Make sure your hot irons have an temperature adjustment. *Do not purchase any irons that go over 450 degrees!

  4. Only use the highest temperature on clean hair, adjust/lower the temperature if your hair is not clean.

  5. Limit how often you flat iron or curl your hair. (You do not have to put heat to your hair daily.)

  6. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HEAT STYLED HAIR STYLE LONGER THAN 2 WEEKS! (I know how easy it is to keep a hairstyle is , but keep in mind the longer you leave your hair straight the longer it will stay straight!)

  7. Stay on a haircut regiment (hair cuts will help to get all of the split / damaged ends)

  8. Use protein / moisturizing conditioners and treatments.

Don’t be afraid to try other alternatives. Maybe use rollers, twist outs or even pin curl your hair! For you ladies wearing sew ins with leave outs .. try leaving less hair out or get a closure! I hope these tips are helpful! We all want healthy hair!

I've been natural for almost 3 years and this is one of my biggest concerns. I don't even blow dry my hair (air dry only) because I'm afraid of heat damage. These tips are really helpful, especially the suggestion about now buying flat irons that heat to over 450.

Sometimes it’s hard to keep your hair from being heat damaged. I was afraid for so long that I wouldn’t use any heat. Now at least I know as long as I use a protectant and I limit my use I should be good. Great advice!
